CHAPTER 15

NO POINT IN TRYING TO PROTECT HER FROM THE TRUTH.

Ro held my mother by the throat, pinning her to the wall a few feet off the ground. Her feet kicked uselessly as she clawed at his hand. Red trails split open along his skin as she clawed at him. The color of her face grew darker as her mouth unsuccessfully gasped for air.

I hated him for this. He always hurt her when she didn't do something he wanted. I wished he would go away. Just disappear from our lives and leave us alone. Heat flushed through me as a wave of dizziness made everything tilt. Why was it so hot in here?

"Parker?" A familiar man's voice called my name, but it didn't belong. I pushed it away.

"Tell me why I shouldn't kill you right now, Eloise?" Ro snarled in my mother's face. "You're an annoying, pitiful human who's quickly outliving her usefulness."

My mother grunted and gasped as she tried to respond.

He waggled the index finger of his free hand in her face. "Not this argument again. I told you. I could easily find a replacement to raise my spawn. You're unnecessary."

She reached for her pocket, but Ro muttered something and an invisible force pinned her arms to the wall.

"Nice try, bitch, but no more witchy spells for you. It's time for you to die because I'm tired of dealing with you." He let go of her, but she remained pressed against the wall. She sucked in a breath of air as her head drooped. "But what kind of demon would I be if I didn't make you pay up first? Deal is a deal."

"Parker, please come back to us." Why did they sound so familiar? I needed to focus right now. Something important was about to happen, but I wasn't sure what.

My mother struggled against whatever held her, but it didn't budge. Her voice was barely a gasp. "No, please."

"You asked for a daughter and I gave you one. I never said I'd let you live to see her grow up. Here's the thing, Eloise. Always read the fine print… devil's in the details, or in my case, the demon. Like it or not, we had an agreement, and your soul is mine." His fingers made a grabbing motion over her ribs. A yellow energy swirled, pulsing every time he repeated the motion. It moved closer to him, leaving my mother looking pale and frightened.

I couldn't let this happen. He couldn't take my mother away from me. I ran toward him, screaming like a banshee. "Leave my mother alone!"

He barely turned his head when I threw all my weight into shoving him. While I'd reached for his hip, his arm blocked me at the last second. An electrical jolt shot through me, leaving me instantly exhausted. Ro's arm exploded into dust. Everything below his elbow was gone. Vanished from my touch. His eyebrows shot up and his lips parted. My mom's soul receded back into her and she dropped to the floor.
